Silkwood Wines

Even though Silkwood Wines are from Stanlislaus
County, Silkwood has earned its place in the Wines of Santa
Cruz Offerings due to the sheer fabulous quality of the
wines along with Silkwood's boutique-style philosophy of
hand harvesting, hand sorting, and minimal wine making intervention.
The varietals produced are Petit Sirah, Syrah, and Cabernet
Sauvignon.
Silkwood practices an usual procedure -
thinning and dropping (literally to the ground) clusters
at version (fruit softening). This practice helps to produce
a rich and intensely flavored wine. Then about 20-25 percent
of the fruit during harvest is dropped in the vineyard.
This is an unusually high amount for any sized winery but
Silkwood contends that this practice of dropping clusters
is essential to produce exceptional quality wine. A number
of different toasted oak wood inserts are used to compliment
the wine, and produce a unique flavor that terms a Silkwood
trait.
Silkwood hand harvests and hand sorts all varietals removing
any clusters with greenies, pinkos, raisins and dry leaves
which produced the double gold medal winning Petite Sirah.
